Fall wedding ideas: dates, colors, menus and weather (September to November)

Why fall is the most popular wedding season in the US, how to pick a date around peak foliage and holidays, color palettes, seasonal food and a cold-evening plan.

Fall is the busiest wedding season in the United States, and September and October are consistently among the most popular months to marry. The weather is mild in much of the country, the light is golden, and the season brings its own palette. The trade-off: popular dates book early and cost more.

Choosing the date

  • Early September: still summer-warm in the South and Southwest; Labor Day weekend gives guests an extra day.
  • Late September to mid-October: peak foliage in New England, the Upper Midwest and the mountains — and peak demand.
  • Late October: cooler, cozier, often better value; Halloween weekend suits a playful theme.
  • November: quieter and cheaper, but short days. Thanksgiving weekend is hard for many guests.

Seasonal flowers and décor

Dahlias, chrysanthemums, garden roses, ranunculus, amaranthus, eucalyptus and dried grasses. Add pumpkins, apples, pears, candles and wool throws — seasonal décor is often cheaper because it is already abundant.

Food and drinks

Apple cider (spiked or not), mulled wine, bourbon cocktails, a s’mores bar or fire pit, comfort-food stations, and pie or apple cider donuts alongside the cake.

Weather and comfort

What to wear

Long sleeves, velvet, satin and richer fabrics suit fall. Guests appreciate a note on the website if the ceremony is outdoors, so they can bring a layer and sensible shoes.
