A wedding speech isn’t a stand-up set or a biography. It’s a short, warm story that makes the room love the couple a little more.
A simple structure
- Who you are and how you know them (one sentence).
- A story that shows who they are.
- Them together: what changed when they met.
- A wish for their marriage.
- The toast: “Please raise your glasses to…”
A sample outline
“Hi everyone, I’m Priya, Maya’s sister and, for twenty-six years, her roommate, stylist and alibi. When Maya was nine, she organized our whole street to save a tree the council wanted to cut down. That’s Maya: fierce, loyal and impossible to say no to. Then she met Daniel — the only person I’ve seen out-organize her. He planned their first date down to the parking spot, and she hasn’t stopped smiling since. Daniel, thank you for loving her so well. Maya, may you keep saving trees and let him carry the snacks. Please raise your glasses: to Maya and Daniel.”
What to avoid
Exes, embarrassing secrets, in-jokes, long lists of thank-yous (that’s the couple’s job), and anything you wouldn’t say in front of their grandparents.
Who speaks, and when
Commonly: a parent or host welcomes guests, then the maid of honor and best man, and sometimes the couple thanks everyone. Two to four speeches is enough. Many receptions place toasts between dinner courses.
