Winter wedding ideas: December holidays, New Year’s Eve and snowy venues

Why winter can be the best-value season, planning around the holidays and snow, cozy décor, warm menus and keeping guests comfortable.

Winter is the quietest wedding season in most of the US, which means better availability and often better prices — except around Christmas and New Year’s Eve, when venues and guests are busy. Plan for weather and short days, and winter weddings are wonderfully cozy.

Choosing the date

  • Early December: venues are often already decorated for the holidays.
  • Christmas to New Year’s: guests may be off work but traveling to family.
  • New Year’s Eve: a built-in party and a countdown — and premium pricing.
  • January to March: the quietest months; ask venues about off-season rates.
  • Valentine’s weekend: romantic and popular, so book early.

Weather and travel

Choose a venue where the ceremony and reception are in one place, or close together. Check that roads and parking are plowed, add a buffer for flights, and share hotel and road information on your website. Ski towns and mountain lodges make beautiful settings — just remember altitude and winter roads.

Light and photos

Look up your sunset time and schedule portraits in the early afternoon, or plan a first look. Spots near big windows, string lights and a candlelit or sparkler exit photograph beautifully after dark.

Cozy décor and palettes

JewelEmerald, burgundy, plum

Candles everywhere, evergreen garlands, velvet linens and a fireplace or fire pit. Amaryllis, anemones, ranunculus, hellebores and evergreens are winter favorites.

Food and drinks

Hot cocoa or coffee bars, mulled cider, warming cocktails, hearty plated dinners and late-night comfort food.

Questions people ask

Are winter weddings cheaper?

Often, yes — January through March is the off-season for many venues. Holiday dates and New Year’s Eve are the exception.

Is a Christmas wedding a good idea?

It can be magical, but many guests have family commitments. Send save-the-dates early and expect some declines.

What should guests wear to a winter wedding?

Long sleeves or a wrap, closed shoes and a warm coat. Mention any outdoor moments on your website.

Quick answers

How much should a wedding cost?

Whatever you can pay without going into debt you’d regret. The US average was about $34,000 for 2025 weddings (The Knot), but many beautiful weddings cost a fraction of that. Start from your savings and monthly capacity, not the average. More answers

How many vendors does a wedding need?

The Knot’s 2026 study found an average of 13. A small wedding might need four or five: venue, food, photographer, officiant and flowers. More answers

What is the order of a wedding ceremony?

Processional, welcome, readings, vows, ring exchange, optional unity ritual, declaration and kiss, recessional. More answers
