Have these ready
1. Certified copies
After your officiant files the license, order several certified copies of your marriage certificate from the county. Many agencies need an original certified copy.
2. Social Security
Request a replacement Social Security card with your new name. According to ssa.gov, you can request a free replacement card, you may be able to start online depending on your situation (otherwise by appointment), and the card arrives by mail in 5–10 business days. Beware of websites that charge a fee to “help.”
3. Driver’s license or state ID
Visit your state’s DMV with your certified certificate and updated Social Security details. Consider getting a REAL ID if you don’t have one.
4. Passport
- Passport issued less than a year ago: use Form DS-5504; the State Department does not charge a fee for the name change (expedited service costs extra).
- Issued more than a year ago: renew by mail with Form DS-82 if eligible, with your certified marriage certificate.
