What happens at the rehearsal
The officiant or coordinator walks everyone through the ceremony: the processional order, where everyone stands, readings, the ring handoff and the recessional. Most rehearsals take 45–60 minutes. Bring the rings’ boxes (not the rings), the marriage license and the program.
Who’s invited
The wedding party and their partners, immediate family, the officiant (and partner), and anyone with a role in the ceremony. Adding out-of-town guests turns it into a welcome party — lovely, but optional.
Who pays
Traditionally the groom’s family. Today it may be either family, both, or the couple. The Knot’s 2026 study reported an average of about $2,800 for the rehearsal dinner.
Timing and format
A rehearsal an hour before dinner. Then a restaurant private room, a backyard barbecue or pizza at the venue. Wrap up so everyone gets sleep.
